Project Overview

Project Overview

The transformation of an existing multi-purpose stable building into Cotts Equine Hospital represented a highly complex and technically demanding construction project. The development created a state-of-the-art equine healthcare facility, designed to accommodate one of only two equine CT scanners in Europe and to deliver advanced diagnostic and surgical capabilities.

Scope of Works

The project involved the full redevelopment and conversion of an existing structure into a specialist veterinary hospital. Delivered in collaboration with Nick Davies, Tim Vaughan Racing, Vale Consult Consultancy, and Total Building Control, the scheme required the integration of complex structural, mechanical, and electrical systems to meet the rigorous standards of a modern clinical environment.

Design & Construction

The facility incorporates a wide range of specialist spaces, including:

  • Two operating theatres

  • Specialist examination and treatment rooms

  • Laboratories and pharmacy facilities

  • Administrative and support accommodation

A key technical challenge was the installation of the equine CT scanner, which required specialist mass concrete works to provide the necessary structural support and stability.

The project also included the integration of a bespoke central hoist gantry system, enabling the safe and efficient transfer of anaesthetised horses between clinical areas.

High-performance insulated and airtight construction systems were implemented throughout, ensuring compliance with stringent thermal performance standards and Building Control requirements.

Outcome

The completed hospital delivers a highly sophisticated veterinary environment, combining advanced medical technology with robust, purpose-built infrastructure. The facility now supports complex surgical, diagnostic, and recovery procedures within a carefully controlled and efficient layout.

Ongoing Impact

Cotts Equine Hospital now stands as a landmark development in equine healthcare, setting a new benchmark for specialist veterinary facilities in the UK and beyond. Its combination of cutting-edge technology, precision engineering, and carefully coordinated construction has positioned it as a leading centre for equine diagnostics and treatment.
