Bespoke Equestrian Buildings – Designed to last.
Bespoke Equestiran Buildings Across South Wales
Our heritage began with horses. We have been building equestrian buildings for over 20 years, however our experience with horses goes back much further. Our extensive experience as horse owners means we understand not only how to build stables, shelters, and equestrian facilities, but how they are used every day and what makes them practical, safe, and comfortable for both horses and their owners.
Timber American Barns
American barns combine secure, weather-resistant accommodation with the practicality of a sheltered central access aisle for year-round use. Their versatile design provides space for horses, equipment, and working areas, while offering flexible layouts and interior customisation.

Bespoke Timber Stables
We build bespoke timber stables that provide the space, comfort, and practicality your horses need while ensuring your yard functions efficiently. With a wide range of configurations available, we can create a stable layout that works for your horses and the available space. We also extend, refurbish, and adapt existing stables, including renewing internal layouts and fittings. Drawing on years of hands-on equestrian experience, we can advise on the best solution for your yard.

Field Shelters
Our high-quality timber field shelters are available in a range of sizes and layouts with a variety of openings and a choice of wooden or metal skids. Their portable design allows them to be moved easily between pastures, relocated in wet weather, or positioned where grazing is needed most.

Equestrian Arenas
From a winter turnout area to a full-size competition arena, we design and build equestrian arenas to suit your needs and budget. Every arena is carefully planned from the ground up, with the correct base construction, drainage, and specialist surface to ensure long-term performance and durability.

}Equestrian Building FAQs
Below are the questions we're asked most often about our equestrian buildings. If you have something more specific in mind, call us on 01446 772 800 — we've been building for horse owners since 2005 and we're happy to talk through any project in detail.
It depends on the scale and intended use of the structure. Small field shelters and ancillary equestrian buildings on agricultural or equestrian land may fall under permitted development, particularly where the land is already in equestrian use. Larger structures — stables, American barns, arenas, and any building with an associated change of use — will typically require a planning application. Building on residential curtilage follows different rules again. Ashdown Group will advise you clearly on what your specific project requires during your free consultation, and we can support the planning process where needed.
An American barn is a large enclosed building with a central aisle and individual stable boxes opening off each side, all contained within a single weatherproof structure. This design offers significant advantages over a row of individual stables: horses are sheltered from the weather during handling and tacking up, the yard is quieter and easier to manage,
and the overall structure is typically more cost-effective to build than the equivalent number of standalone stables. American barns are popular with competition yards, livery businesses, and larger private equestrian properties. Ashdown Group builds American barns to any specification — we’ll discuss size, number of boxes, aisle width, roof type, and ventilation strategy to match your yard’s needs exactly.
We use pressure-treated structural softwood throughout our equestrian buildings. The treatment process — typically tanalising or a similar preservative system — penetrates deep into the timber to resist rot, fungal decay, and insect damage without leaving surface residues that are harmful to horses. We avoid treatments containing creosote or other
compounds known to be hazardous to equines. All fixings are recessed or covered to eliminate sharp edges, and we use smooth-planed internal boarding wherever horses are in direct contact with the structure. If you have specific requirements around timber specification or treatment, we’re happy to discuss them.
Yes — we can build field shelters as either permanent structures on a fixed base or as skid-mounted portable shelters that can be moved around the field. Portable shelters are a popular choice where planning consent for a permanent structure isn’t in place, or where seasonal rotation of grazing land makes flexibility important. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of each approach for your specific land and situation and recommend the right solution. Both options are built to the same structural standard — properly engineered timber, weatherproof roofing, and a finish that handles years of outdoor use.
