Construction With Sustainability in Mind
A considered Approach to Construction
Built with Timber
Timber is a versatile and renewable building material. When responsibly sourced, it can provide a more sustainable choice for a wide range of construction projects.
Built to Last
Sustainability often means looking beyond the cheapest or shortest-term solution. Quality materials, thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship create buildings that are made to last.
Built for the Future
For those looking to prioritise energy efficiency, the way a building performs can be just as important as how it is built. Where high-performance construction and sustainable energy technologies form part of the brief, we can deliver the build to the required specification and help create buildings fit for the future.
Timber – A Sustainable Choice for Modern Construction
All of our timber is responsibly sourced. Where appropriate for the project, we can also consider homegrown timber options, which can help reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting materials.
Our timber is sourced through suppliers with FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) Chain of Custody and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody certification, supporting the responsible sourcing of timber from sustainably managed forests.
Choosing timber is just one part of the process. How a building is specified, constructed and maintained can all influence its environmental impact over time.
Where sustainability is an important consideration, we can work to the requirements of the project, using appropriate materials and proven construction methods to deliver the build.

Built to Stand the Test of Time
Taking a longer-term approach can mean looking beyond a cheap or short-term solution. Choosing quality materials and getting the construction right from the outset can help reduce unnecessary replacement, waste and the use of additional resources over time.
At Ashdown, we focus on building things properly from the start.
Whether we’re building a garden room, a bespoke timber building, a home extension or a larger commercial project, we use appropriate materials and proven construction methods to create buildings that are fit for purpose and made to last.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies
For those planning an energy-efficient or sustainable construction project in South Wales, the way a building performs and uses energy can be an important part of the overall brief.
Depending on the project requirements, energy-efficient construction methods and renewable technologies can be incorporated into the build. As principal contractor, Ashdown can coordinate the construction and specialist elements required to deliver the agreed specification.
Depending on the project, this may include:
- Solar energy systems
- Battery storage
- Heat pumps
- Energy-efficient heating and ventilation
- Low-energy lighting
- Smart energy controls
The right approach will depend on the building, its intended use and the requirements of the individual project.

Passivhaus Principles and High-Performance Construction
Where a project has been designed around Passivhaus principles or other high-performance construction standards, we can work to the required drawings and specification to deliver the build with the care and attention to detail these projects demand.
High-performance buildings can require particular attention during construction to help manage heat loss, airtightness, insulation, windows, doors and ventilation.
Depending on the design and specification, this may include:
High Levels of Insulation
Helping reduce heat loss and improve year-round comfort.Airtight Construction
Helping limit uncontrolled air leakage while allowing ventilation to be managed as specified.High-Performance Windows and Doors
Supporting improved thermal performance and reduced heat loss.Careful Construction and Detailing
Following the required drawings and specification to deliver the intended level of performance. Not every project requires a full Passivhaus approach. Where high-performance construction forms part of the brief, we can deliver the build to the required specification.
